Hygiene in mental health is now as important as health in general. Knowledge about how to take care of you own mental health, how to overload your defence system, becomes primary factor in the prevention of mental illness. I always wondered why people talk freely about personal hygiene, but mental one raises anxiety. As, we know it is easier to address our physical needs   when mental presents not only a serious topic but also serious difficulties. Many people mistakenly think that only those who suffer from mental difficulties need to think about mental hygiene. they do not think that they also need to look after their own mental state to remain mentally well.

Mental health difficulties can affect the way that people think, feel, and behave. A mental health problem can feel as bad or even worse as any other physical illness because is manifested not by bad mood; but also under the cover of physical and behavioural symptoms ( sleeplessness, chest pain, skin rush, poor appetite, nausea, palpitation, isolation, procrastination).

Mental health problems can have a wide range of causes. Factors such as abuse, trauma, negligence, social isolation, discrimination, bulling, poverty, domestic abuse, long-term stress could potentially activate poor mental health. In addition, there so also many jobs threatened with occupational burnout, in which employees most often experience depression related to their profession.

For example:

Social worker: dealing with abused children, dysfunctional families, addiction, physical and mental health difficulties, poverty, vulnerability is extremely difficult. His work usually does not end after 8 hours. Stressful situations, big caseload, lack of resources as well as enormous responsibilities for health and life of others, are reflected in his own health.

Care assistant: typical day for the carer of the elderly is to meet day to day needs (feeding, bathing) as well as to provide emotional support. Often, elderly people are unable to express gratitude or appreciation because they are too ill. More, some days they become aggressive and verbally abusive. So, due to lack of regular and positive feedback, carers often suffer from low mood and lack of motivation.

Nurses, doctors: those people help us to keep our physical and mental health in an immaculate condition. Long night shifts, diseases, pandemic, injuries, the death of patient, accusations, complains are causes that suicidal attempts in this profession are much more frequent then in other groups.

Teachers: students behaviour, performance assessment, time management, accusation are the some of the biggest triggers for this group. Research shows that one in three teachers has turned to alcohol, drugs, smoking and binge-eating because of pressures at work, exhaustion, mood swings and stress.

Additionally, in every profession the interpersonal demands of leadership, such as establishing and maintaining relationships, are countless. So, the negative aspects of interpersonal relationships, such as dealing with difficult personalities, political strategy and managing conflict, impacting leaders mental state.

So, do you need to consider regular mental health hygiene?
